A Time to Give

"Thanksgiving, after all, is a word of action." ~ W.J. Cameron

Thanksgiving dates back to 1621, when the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast. In 1863, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November, which was celebrated on the last Thursday of the month. In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday up a week in an attempt to spur retail sales during the Great Depression and in 1941 he signed a bill making Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November.

Join us now through November 21st for our community food drive, benefiting Family Matters of Greater Washington.

Family Matters of Greater Washington is a 501(c)3 organization that provides vital social services to DC's most vulnerable children, families, and seniors. With hunger at an all-time high in the District, many of their clients will not have access to a warm meal on Thanksgiving.

The group needs mostly perishable items, so gift cards to Giant Supermarket would be greatly appreciated. However, canned food is always welcome.
