Ted Bundy

Getting Away With Murder for Five Years

Life Span: 11/24/1946- 1/24/1989

Ted Bundy was described as charming, articulate and intelligent man. Those were the traits that might have allowed him to get close to his victims. Bundy raped and / or murdered scores of women, strangling and mutilating his victims. He displayed their lopped off heads in his apartment and slept with their corpses until putrefaction made it unbearable.

He tended to prey on college campuses first in Washington, then in Utah and Colorado, and finally in Florida. His victims were women who looked much like a young woman who broke off her relationship with him.

Bundy was first arrested in Utah but escaped and continued his killing spree. He was stopped for a traffic violation in Florida leading to his final arrest, February 15, 1978. He was sentenced to death and died in the electric chair in 1989.

At the time of his execution, Bundy had confessed to 30 murders, though the actual number of his victims remains unknown.

Fake Injury:

Bundy often wore his arm in a sling or in a fake cast or his leg in a fake cast. He would ask his victims to help him carry things to his car or help load or unload things from his car. Once the victims got in his car or were leaning into his car he would strike them over the head with a crowbar or pipe, after hitting his victims he would handcuff them to immobilize them.

*See car safety tips in the Volkswagen Bug section of this web page.

Charm, Attractiveness, and Intelligence:

Ted Bundy was an intelligent good looking man, many of his victims did not fear or question him because he did not look like a "monster" and was charismatic. Serial Killers come in all shapes and sizes, do not be fooled by charisma, charm, and attractiveness.

*If someone is telling you something that doesn't sound right reevaluate the situation you are in and look for a way out, no matter how they appear.

Impersonation:

Ted Bundy tried to impersonate a police officer and an officer from the fire department to make his victims do as he said.

*Always ask anybody who identifies themselves as an officer of any sort for identification. Do not let them flash their ID at you; make sure you look at it to see what it says. Make sure the person has a badge and Identification from the agency they are saying they are from.

If you are unsure that the car trying to pull you over is an actual police vehicle drive to a well lit highly populated area before you pull over and do not get out of the car.

If you think you are being stopped or instructed by a fake, call 911 and ask for help identifying the person talking to you or for back-up.

The Volkswagen Bug
Ted Bundy had driven 2 different VW bugs, both were yellowish in color. The car that Bundy was driving when first arrested in Salt Lake City, Utah, and that he surrendered in an attempt to make bail. The VW bug that Bundy was driving when arrested in Florida wasn't one in which he was confirmed to have committed crimes.

Bundy had removed the bolts of the passenger car seat and he would often store it in the trunk. This made his victims unseen when traveling in his car. He would then replace the seat.

Bundy's VW Bug is currently on display in the museum's lobby.

Car Safety Tips
Never get into a stranger's car or lean into a stranger's car with your back to the person. Just because someone seems old or disabled doesn't mean they can't hurt you. Women have a tendency to be sympathetic, make sure these sympathies are not played on.

If you are thrown into the trunk of a car kick out the tail lights and stick your hand out the holes and wave your arm about. The driver will not see this but all passing vehicles will.

If someone pulls up to you in a car pointing a gun at you telling you to get in, DO NOT get in, start running away from the car toward its rear and start screaming.

If someone has gotten into your passenger side door or into the backseat and is telling you to drive them somewhere do not drive off, instead drive into a stationary object and get out of the car and run.

Avoid parking next to large trucks or vans. If a van parks next to your driver's side door, climb into your car from the passenger side so you cannot be pulled into the van via the sliding side door.
